Many times one may require replacement of the tooth lost due to deep cavities, trauma or other serious dental diseases. Crowns and bridges are the common prosthodontics procedures involving fixing of permanent dental crown or a bridge to restore lost teeth, function and aesthetics. There are different types of crowns available with us :-
- All Ceramic (Zirconia/ E max/ metal free/ monolithic/ porcelain) Crown:-
All ceramic zirconia crowns have excellent aesthetic and strength. They do not have any metal structure hence is best suited for anterior teeth for excellent natural appearance or molars needing strong dental caps.
2. Metal Ceramic/ PFM (Porcelain fused to metal) Crown:-
The PFM or metal ceramic crown offer optimum aesthetic and appearance with low cost. This crown has an inner core of nickel-cobalt-chromium metal coated with tooth colored porcelain. They are good option for back side teeth which require more strength.
3. Metal Crowns:-
These crowns are made of nickel-cobalt-chromium alloy and appear silver in color and are low cost. They can be used in posterior teeth replacement, however the colour and appearance limit their use.

Q. Are dental crowns permanent?
A. Dental Crown can be temporary which are made of acrylic and can be fixed long term (metal, PFM or ceramic). The metal/PFM/ceramic crowns or bridges offer high strength and can be fixed with strong cements.
Q. Which is better? Metal ceramic (PFM) or all ceramic?
A. Both have equal advantages and disadvantages. Metal ceramic offer decent strength and aesthetic, they are economical and bond to tooth well. They lack superior aesthetic and ceramic chipping, metal based reactions can occur. On the other hand all ceramic zirconia crowns have excellent finish and aesthetics offering most natural looks. They have high strength but require advanced cements to bond with tooth structure. They are MRI compatible but are costly as compared to PFM caps.
